Only a small
percentage of ferrets which are kept as pets and belong to
the public are microchipped; that percentage is even lower
if you look at the numbers of ferrets which are used as
working animals.
Owners have an
obligation to ensure that should their ferret is lost or
escapes then every means is made available to try and find them
and return them safely. It is a simple conclusion that
should a ferret have a microchip inserted under the skin
then that ferret, if found, can be scanned and then returned
back to its owner with the minimum of fuss. It is good
practise for all rescue and welfare centres to scan ferrets
when they are bought in to check for a microchip.
FERT
strongly encourages individuals, welfares, rescues as well
as the ferret working community to get all their animals
(cats, dogs, rabbits as well!) chipped by a trained
professional for the ferrets safety as well as the owners
piece of mind.
By prior
arrangement, FERT can attend days arranged by welfares,
rescues and other organisations where we will microchip
animals on your behalf with funds and profits being returned
to the listed welfare or charity of your choice. Alternatively
you can always ask your local vet as this is a minor
procedure which is easy to carry out.
