Steve qualified from Bristol University Vet School in 1996. The BBC had his final year in college for a series called ‘Vet School’ that started a parallel career to his veterinary one. Steve's first job was in a Lancashire mixed practice looking after cows, horses, sheep, cats and dogs. He loved traveling around the countryside working with the farm stock but Steve realised that he didn’t want to be a jack-of-all-trades so settled on full-time small animal work. The BBC continued to follow Steve in his chosen career but he was also being offered the chance to travel the world filming wildlife documentaries. Steve was adamant that he wouldn’t leave veterinary medicine behind and endeavored to keep his skills up to date.

sleonard2_2In 2002 he started his long association with PDSA, the UK’s largest veterinary charity. Steve had come across this wonderful organisation when training at Bristol and was keen to get involved. Steve worked as a PDSA vet in their Stoke-on-Trent branch between filming projects and offered his assistance with their P.R.

When Tom (Steve's brother) started the family practice in Whitchurch, Shropshire (UK) Steve was available to provide him with assistance and cover for the first year and a half but as the practice grew he needed someone more permanent. Steve started full-time with him in April 2007 taking occasional breaks to go filming still with the BBC.

Steve says "I love working at the practice. We have a really good team who are really passionate about animal welfare and client care. I have enrolled in a RCVS Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice in Small Animal Medicine (CertAVP(SAM)) which will realistically take me between 3-7 years to complete. So plenty of homework for me!"

FERT is very fortunate to have Steve onboard both as a Patron and also an advisor. Steve brings a wealth of experience when dealing with the media and also his hands-on experience of veterinary care for animals of all shapes and sizes.
