FERT would like to thank the BSAVA for its kind donation of their most recent book that covers veterinary care for ferrets. The book offers a great point of reference and is a valuable addition to any keen ferret enthusiast or practicing veterinary with an interest in ferret care.
The BSAVA Manual of Rodents and Ferrets, edited by Emma Keeble and Anna Meredith and published in March 2009, is a response to the increased number of rodents and ferrets kept as pets and the demand for appropriate veterinary care for these patients, whose small size, susceptibility to stress-related problems and short natural life expectancy present challenges to the veterinary surgeon.
In recognition of the fundamental differences between the rodent group of species and ferrets, the book is presented in two distinct sections. The ferret section covers the all-important biology, husbandry and clinical techniques (including physical examination, diagnostic imaging, pathology, anaesthesia and surgery) followed by chapters on common diseases organised by clinical system (dermatoses, digestive system disorders, cardiovascular and respiratory system disorders, urogenital and reproductive system disorders, nervous and musculoskeletal disorders, ophthalmology, endocrine and neoplastic diseases, and systemic viral diseases).
High-quality colour images and numerous quick-reference tables accompany the text, which has been written by an international field of contributing authors with extensive practical experience.
“This is another in the excellent series of BSAVA manuals… The chapters on ferrets are an excellent guide, and contain sufficient information in a practical context to treat these animals. In view of recent developments there is some up to date practical advice on the reproductive management of this species. The manual should find a niche in the practice library and prove a valuable resource.” European Journal of Companion Animal Practice
