distemper cover 300Over the coming weeks FERT will be releasing a number of husbandry and topic orientated leaflets intended to educate those whom have an interest in ferrets and their welfare.

The first title in this range covers the serious disease called Canine Distemper or CDV for short.

The leaflet is intended to give a brief understanding of the disease, a list of common symptoms, details on what to do if you believe your ferret is showing symptoms and also advice on vaccination.

Ian Kearns, CEO for FERT says "CDV is a very serious issue as the disease is nearly always 100% fatal to ferrets. If left then the ferret can suffer pain and discomfort. It has always been our advice to vaccinate ferrets against this disease which was a policy adopted by the RSPCA in 2010 and everyone should remain vigilant. With cases being reported over the last couple of years we hope this public leaflet will help those ferret owners to make an informed choice"

Upon review of the leaflet by the FERT Advisors, Steve Leonard; Patron, Vet and TV Presenter said "Love the leaflet. Clear and concise with sensible information"

The leaflet covers the following sections:-

  • Overview
  • Symptoms
  • If You Suspect CDV In Your Ferret
  • Diagnosing CDV In Ferrets
  • Treatment and Palliative Care
  • Comparison Of Symptoms With Human Influenza Virus In Ferrets
  • Vaccination

The leaftlet does carry an Advisory Notice as some imagery in the document may be considered upsetting to certain people.

FERT would like to thank its Advisors with their assistance in compiling the data contained and also to Rene C. Gandolfi, DVM, Dipl. ABVP; Castro Valley Companion Animal Hospital, California for assisting with veterinary imagery.
